Today is the 16th of November, a day that will always be special to me and a night I will never forget. Australia qualified for its first World Cup in 32 years in dramatic fashion. Three years on, I’d like to relive that memorable night. Here’s a poem I wrote all those years ago:

A week ago today, we witnessed incredible scenes around the world as the first black president was elected in the USA. Me and my colleague were strong supporters of Barack Obama, and naturally we were elated with his election. We see eye to eye with all the issues Obama has put forward, but then I thought to myself one day, what does this election mean for one of the issues I’m passionate about, but I have overlooked? I am of course talking about football. So what does Barack Obama mean for football? I decided to find out. Arsenal Football Club - The Pride of London
By James Tillson

Arsenal football club is one of the best sides in the English Premier League and indeed the world. Based in North London and Nicknamed ‘the Gunners’ they are renowned for playing beautiful football. They joined the Football League in 1893 but had to then wait 30 years before winning their first major title. Now their trophy cabinet contains 5 League titles and 2 FA Cups.

This is, however, changing in 2009 with Japan hosting a one-game final on “neutral territory”.

This year’s final involves an unsung and unlikely club from the AFC’s newest member, Adelaide United, and one of the pretenders in Japanese football in Gamba Osaka.

Arsenal fans, like me and my colleague Martin, this season have experienced a series of emotions. From the highs of smashing Fenerbache, Sheffield United, Blackburn and Porto, to the lows of playing poorly against weaker teams such as Fulham, Hull and now Stoke. This is an emotional rollercoaster that does not do justice to the Arsenal fan, who got so close last season. It simply doesn’t make sense to be doing extremely well against decent teams, but faltering against arguably much weaker opposition. There must be some fundamental problems and I think I know what they are.
